Last round of MAL
Well, the last round is over. I managed to play the whole game, and the knee felt good. I'm still out of shape from taking some time off though.
I think this game was quite typical of both teams.
Big City had Tony creating things as a thrower, Mike as an offensive focal point, a junk D most of the time, and Mat being both effective and an arsehole. Quite usual.
UQ have the ability to rip up any team in the league, and it showed, but as usual our lack of fundamentals let us down.
We don't stack straight
We don't stack short
We have either no cuts or multiple cuts to the same place
Our endzone O is crap
We keep getting broken
A couple of skills errors didn't help
And I get frustrated rather easily and throw a lot of turnovers...
Same old story for UQ as well...
It really frustrates me that a team with this much potential has not yet bridged the gap to performance...
Anway, semis next week, finals the week after. If we click, we can win both weeks going away. If we play poorly, we'll lose both weeks by half a dozen.
P.S. Rubes, you played great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I particularly liked that one where I got the intercept on their goal shot and then hucked it to you for the goal.

That was delightful.
I am looking forward to my last games as a Lover!
Aww Shucks John...
Thanks for the 'effective' compliment, although I'm a little uncertain about the 'arsehole' part.
Was it the goals I threw against your team? Or maybe the goals I caught? Who knows...
Either way, I agree with most of your assessments of UQ. But to me it seems that the weakest part of the lovers game is that it is so emotionally fragile.
Personally you play with great spirit, but your team is very fond of the overt celebration, and for the frailhearted that can be a double edged sword.
If you cant take it, dont dish it out.... because you can bet your arse(hole) it is gonna come right back at you.
Anyhoo....
See you in the playoffs (ie: sideline drinkoffs).
Interesting comment Mat. Personally your comments/actions never bother me, I just enjoy the banter.
Whilst it is true that if you can't take it you shouldn't dish it out, I would say that Lovers celebrations were more about encouraging our team then intimidating the other team :-)
It's a shame that Lovers didn't make the finals as that makes last night my last game for Lovers - ever. I offically retire from Lovers - a part from finishing uni, I think I need to move on and play with some other people and in some different roles, although I do feel I learnt a lot and had fun playing with Lovers over the years.
Hey Mat,
Well, the goals that you threw and caught were more about the "effective" bit. No denying there was a few of them...
The "arsehole" part was about your own celebration after getting around me to grab Tony's huck for the score. Maybe it was my perspective (i.e. on the ground, watching you score the goal), maybe it was frustration that you scored on me when I had position, but it didn't look too pretty.
It's no secret that you like to fire up when you play, and maybe that particular celebration was no different or worse than any other goal you've caught this league. I did get a comment from your team as I jogged back, thanking me for not making anything of it.
I know that you generally fire up when you score, and usually take no offence, but this particular occasion didn't go down too well in my head.
I apologise for putting that thought up in a public forum though. Sorry mate, that was poor form, and thanks for not totally flaming me.
And I agree that UQ usually celebrates louder, more overtly, and also sometimes more obnoxiously than the other 3 teams.
For myself personally, I don't think I've ever "dished it out" as such when it comes to celebrating, as I try to be restrained. Maybe I have, that's not up to me to say.
Again, apologies for airing my thoughts publicly.
See you at the esky.
